In a recent meeting with Pharmacy leadership, they have stated that the pharmacists must review all medications prior to them being administered in the lab. We have come up with a plan for the pharmacy to create an order set of our commonly used medications.  For the GI team, the fellows and NPs will be placing the procedure medication order sets into CPRS in clinic setting.  Pharmacy will them review the orders placed for the patients prior to the cases.

Due to procedures being scheduled far out on the calendar and frequent reschedules, we will request that pharmacy allows these order sets to be valid/active for up to 6 months.

For direct schedule patients, Karen Bartholet will alert a GI NP to order the GI procedure medication order set.

The day before the scheduled procedures, when the GI/Pulm RN’s are placing the consult order into CPRS, the RN’s will review the chart to ensure the procedure medication order set has been placed. For last minute add-ons or in-pts, the fellows will need to enter the procedure medication order set as soon as they begin to plan for the case.

We do not have a lot of pulmonary procedures under moderate sedation in the lab, so when a physician calls to get one scheduled, we could just have them place the order set into CPRS at that time. Pharmacy leadership said, if the patient cancels and the order set isn’t used, that will not create any problems.
